Mark Hamill has written about the “bittersweet” feeling of facing his final Star Wars episode without the late Carrie Fisher.

Last week it was announced that Fisher would feature in the next instalment of the popular saga, using footage recorded before her death in 2016.

Fisher found international stardom as Princess Leia but she died aged 60, following a heart attack on a Los Angeles-bound flight.

She had just finished work on The Last Jedi.

Hamill, who was her co-star in early episodes and is set to reprise the role of Luke Skywalker in Episode IX, shared two images on Twitter of himself and Fisher, writing: “In loving memory of our princess Carrie Fisher.

“It’s bittersweet facing my final chapter without her – she is simply irreplaceable.

“I’m finding solace in the fact that she won’t BE replaced and would love the worldwide outpouring of affection from those who loved her when they heard the news.

Star Wars: Episode IX begins filming on Wednesday at Pinewood Studios and will include returning cast members Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega and Lupita Nyong’o among others.

Fisher will play the role of Princess Leia again, with the previously unseen footage coming from the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

This will bring her character’s story to an end.

Writer and director JJ Abrams said: “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher.”

The as-yet-untitled film is due to be released worldwide in December 2019.
