Gigi Hadid confronting a prankster who jumped on the runway at Chanel dominated the headlines this morning. But before the humorous incident occurred, an 80+ look collection came down the runway. This season artistic director Virginie Viard took a decidedly youthful approach, with an abundance of short skirts and hot pants.

Always known for its elaborate set pieces, this season the house brought the iconic rooftops of Paris down to street level at the Grand Palais. “The roofs of Paris remind me of the atmosphere of the Nouvelle Vague,” Viard explains. “I saw silhouettes walking on the roofs. I thought about Kristen Stewart playing Jean Seberg and all the actresses Gabrielle Chanel dressed at that time.”

Styled with flat shoes and little hats — often accessorized with flowers — the looks certainly brought out the Parisian ingenue feel. One can imagine Viard’s girl running through the city on adventures. “Total freedom of movement,” as the show’s notes indicate, is an important aspect of the collection. Masculine elements, most notably in the tailoring of the jackets, balanced it all out.

Overall it was an incredibly optimistic collection — and not just because it was presented in front of a blue sky. Viard’s focus on lighter silhouettes that showcase the hallmarks of the house (tweed among them) is an easy way of shaking things up and making the label fun again.
