First Quantum Minerals (OTCPK:FQVLF) -7.3% in trading on Thursday after suspending operations at its open-pit Sentinel copper mine in Zambia following a road accident at the site that killed one worker and seriously injured another.
Company said operations in the pit will remain suspended until it is deemed safe to continue; the Sentinel mine produced 64,120 metric tons of copper during the third quarter of 2022.
Separately, Reuters reported that directors of First Quantum ( OTCPK:FQVLF ) will meet in Panama this week for a board meeting, amid a long-running dispute over a contract with the government to operate the Cobre Panama mine.
First Quantum (OTCPK:FQVLF) and the Panamanian government are negotiating a contract to operate a copper mine, with taxes and royalties at the top of the discussions.
The government said last week that First Quantum (OTCPK:FQVLF) would not be allowed to expand the area of Cobra Panama’s existing mining operations.
