Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys fell short in this season’s NFC divisional round against the San Francisco 49ers. Prescott has been under the microscope as the Cowboys’ quarterback since taking over as the starter in 2016. However, has owner Jerry Jones lost faith in his franchise quarterback?
On ESPN’s “Get Up,” when former Cowboys tight end Marcus Spears was asked if Prescott’s job would be in question next season, Spears said:
“That decision has to be made, and it’s based on his performance this year. You have to determine how far behind you the Philadelphia Eagles are and what (Howie) Roseman has done with creating a roster with a young quarterback that he’ll probably have to pay this year but still be able to limit maneuver and keep some of these players.
“Obviously, with the talent that’s around him now, you obviously lose a few things when you sign a quarterback, and that’s what we alluded to when Dad got the money. There are parts of his roster that would have to be overcome with his ability and his play , and he didn’t rise to that.”
Dak Prescott led the Cowboys to the playoffs four times in seven seasons with the franchise. He has a 2-4 playoff record, throwing for 1,559 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. The 2016 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year is fourth in Cowboys history in both playoff yards and career touchdowns.
Still, does Jones still believe in Dak Prescott, who he gave a four-year, $160 million contract in March 2021?

Jerry Jones spoke to the media after the loss to the 49ers, saying he thought the Cowboys would beat them because he had “so much confidence in Dak.” Prescott threw for 206 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in a 19-12 victory.
“I thought we were going to win because I have a lot of confidence in Dak,” Jones said. “I’m going to put myself there five times with that (similar) situation, and if we have him at quarterback, I’m going to take a chance. So, I’m just saying give me that lineup a year in advance, a month in advance and give me him at quarterback, and I’m very confident that we will win.”
Given Prescott’s enormous contract, it would be difficult for the Dallas Cowboys to try to trade him since next season’s cap hit will be more than $49 million. Let’s see what the longtime owner does with his franchise signal this offseason.
