BERLIN (Reuters) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has decided to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and allow other countries such as Poland to do so, while the United States could supply Abrams tanks, Spiegel magazine reported on Tuesday.

A government spokesman declined to comment. The Defense Ministry was not immediately available for comment.

The decision concerns at least one company of Leopard 2 A6 tanks that will be delivered from Bundeswehr stock, Spiegel said.

Other allies, for example in Scandinavia, intend to agree with Germany in delivering their Leopard tanks to Kiev, the magazine reported.

In the long term, more tanks could be refurbished to make them serviceable, the magazine said.
