Kyrie Irving is requesting a trade from the Brooklyn Nets, Shams Charania confirms

In a shocking turn of events, Kyrie Irving has requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. Shams Charania of The Athletic recently reported that the All-Star guard has informed the team that he wants to be moved or will leave in free agency.

The latest: Brooklyn Nets All-Star Kyrie Irving has requested a trade, league sources say @TheAthletic @Stadium. The franchise has been informed that Irving prefers to move on before the Feb. 9 trade deadline – or he will leave in free agency in July.

This isn’t the first time Kyrie Irving has asked the front office to move him. Many thought his tenure with the Brooklyn Nets was over this summer before he opted for a player option.

Despite all the drama off the court this year, Irving has been an elite talent on the court. He was recently named an All-Star starter after averaging 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists in his first 40 games.

Before Kevin Durant was sidelined with an injury, he and Irving led Brooklyn to first place in the Eastern Conference. Even without the former MVP, they are still in fourth place with a 31-20 record. With a championship in mind, the Nets front office must now find a suitable return for one of their stars.

For the second time in a row, Brooklyn was forced to move one of its top talents. James Harden was sent to the Philadelphia 76ers last year in place of Ben Simmons, and now Kyrie Irving is looking for a new change of scenery. With less than a week until the deadline, the front office has a lot of work to do.

Trading for Kyrie Irving is a huge gamble

While Kyrie Irving may want to be moved, it won’t be that easy. For a number of reasons, any team trying to sign him will be taking a huge risk.

The first thing that catches the eye is his contract. With him walking in free agency this offseason, suitors won’t be willing to move valuable assets in a trade. On top of that, the only teams that could try to get him are the ones that feel they have a chance to re-sign him this summer.

Another important factor in all of this is Irving’s reputation around the league. Since he is known as a wild card, this could deter most teams from making an offer. While his abilities on the field cannot be denied, his availability is always questionable.

Despite all these things to consider, some team could come and roll the dice on a trade. At the end of the day, he’s an elite-level scorer who can put any potential opponent in the mix to win a title.
