Liz Hurley wore 'That Dress' after snub by designers
Liz Hurley wore “That Dress” after being shunned by other top designers, Hugh Grant has revealed.
The actress, 54, stole the red carpet show and sent photographers into a frenzy after wearing the daring black Versace gown, held together by oversized gold safety pins back in 1994.
She had been accompanying Grant, her then-boyfriend, to the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral which catapulted him to stardom.
Grant, 59, has now told a BBC documentary that when Hurley had called up fashion houses asking if she could borrow an outfit to wear for the occasion, they refused as they had not heard of her.
He said: “There was a big premiere and someone told us – we knew nothing then, me and Elizabeth, about how you sort of cope with those things – someone said: ‘Oh you can borrow things from top designers.’
“Poor Elizabeth rang some top designers and they all said: ‘No, who are you?’ or ‘No, we’re not lending you anything.’
“Then Versace said: ‘Yes, we’ll lend you a dress’, and they just sent one round which is that one with the safety pins.
“So she shoved it on and I raised my eyebrows a fraction and we set off.”
The pair split up in 2000 after he was infamously caught with a Hollywood prostitute.
Among those appearing in the programme about Grant’s screen career, was Four Weddings scriptwriter Richard Curtis.
He revealed Grant was nearly not cast in the film that made his name.
Curtis, whose other hits starring the actor include Notting Hill, Love Actually and Bridget Jones’s Diary, said: “We had auditioned about 60 people for the leading role and none of them were funny.
“I had such a prejudice against him because he was so posh and so handsome, and I thought that someone that handsome wouldn’t be having that much trouble with girls.”
