Last night, NeueHouse cultural center hosted LensCrafters’ ABCs of Vision Care for Back to School event — a cocktail party and conversation with Maggie Gyllenhaal, moderated by Jane Larkworthy.

Gyllenhaal, who is something of an eyewear expert, lit up the intimate space in a bright dress paired with elegant jewelry and flattering metal-framed glasses, courtesy LensCrafters. She and Jane Larkworth, The Cut’s beauty editor-at-large, discussed eyewear as fashion, vision health, and motherhood.

Gyllenhaal, star of HBO’s The Deuce, is near-sighted, along with many members of her family. “I remember being in modern European history and I sort of started squinting a little,” she recalled. She got her first pair at age 14, although her sight only “got worse and worse. Thank God I checked it out every year.”

Not that her need for glasses is any sort of hinderance. “Glasses are almost like another piece of jewelry,” she says. “They can help you see but also be like a decoration.”

The proud owner of vintage Dior and Gucci frames, Gyllenhaal thinks that “like with anything, the kind of glasses you like changes. For me, the kind of frames I want changes about every year and a half.”

Gyllenhaal’s eldest daughter, Ramona, is also an eyewear devotee. Despite having perfect eyesight, the 12 year old has an extensive collection of glasses. “I’ve got pretty cool glasses, maybe that’s why she likes them,” Gyllenhaal told the audience with a laugh.

The award-winning actress prefers to buy her glasses on her own, without input from her family or friends. She believes it is a “personal, private, meditative, and long process. I’ve made mistakes before and it’s a long-term commitment,” she said.
