Media hype. Terrible ratings for the terrible Grammys

The ratings for the Grammy Awards were terrible, but you’d never know it if you watched the headlines in the liberal media.

Several news outlets praised the grades this year as very good.

They weren’t.

They have been only a slight improvement over recent years. Hardly a great night.

The point is that the viewership was the best since 2020.

The telecast of the 65th annual Grammy Awards drew 12.4 million viewers Sunday night, according to Nielsen’s fast national time zone-adjusted ratings, making it the most-watched show of the night and the largest audience for the ceremony since 2020.

That’s up 30% from last year’s show, which drew roughly 9.6 million viewers after the Live+same-day results came in at the end of the week. The 2022 ceremony served as the first in-person Grammy Awards after the coronavirus pandemic.

The Grammy Awards hit a three-year high for CBS on Sunday night, but like most awards shows, numbers are still well below pre-pandemic levels.

The 65th Grammys, which returned to their usual winter home after being held in April and March the past two years, brought in 12.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen’s time zone-adjusted national flash rating and including streaming on the Paramount+ and CBS apps. (Final ratings, which will give a better look at the on-air and cross-platform breakdown, will be available Tuesday morning.) That’s a nearly 30 percent improvement over the 9.59 million people who watched the 2022 award — though the latter figure is just the TV audience.

How about a little context to understand just how awful 12.4 million viewers are…?

In 2020, the Grammys drew 18.7 million viewers, which was considered a disaster. The 18.7 million at the time, which is 50 percent more than this Sunday evening, was almost the lowest in history…

The only reason entertainment media can turn this 12.4 million debacle into something that isn’t a debacle is because of the 8.8 million who watched in 2021 and the 8.9 million who watched in 2022.

So yeah, I guess 12.4 million is more than 8.8 million, but two times zero is still zero, y’all.

This is an award show that consistently drew 20 to 30 million viewers between 1976 and 2019. Between 2010 and 2017, the Grammys consistently brought in 20 million or more. In 2012, they were listened to by almost 40 million.

In recent years, millions of Americans have turned down entertainment awards shows for reasons obvious to anyone but people in the entertainment industry.
