Nigerian lawmaker on trial for organ harvesting in London

A Nigerian senator and his wife appeared in a London court on Tuesday to begin their organ harvesting trial.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice have been charged with organ harvesting for allegedly bringing a 21-year-old from Nigeria to the UK to have his kidney removed.

According to the BBC, prosecutors claim the couple planned to have the 21-year-old man’s organs removed so they could be given to their daughter, who needed a new kidney.

The victim reportedly refused the procedure and later contacted the police.

Despite being accused of organ harvesting, Ekweremadu is yet to assume office.

Ekweremadu’s refusal to resign has led many Nigerians to protest outside the London court overseeing his case.

One woman told Barron’s: “This case is unbelievable. “Where else in the world would you have a deputy senate president — who is still an active senator, still receiving his regular salary?”

In recent years, organ harvesting has become more widespread.

It is happening not only in Europe and China, but also in the United States.
