Many celebrities seem to be living a picture perfect life, but it hasn’t always been that way. For quite a few stars their childhoods and personal lives have been marred by close family members with serious personal troubles. Many celebrities have had to deal with serious crimes that hit close to home because of involvement of their children, parents or siblings. Here are some well known celebrities whose close family members have committed serious and horrible crimes:

26. Terrence Howard’s Father

While unfortunately actor Terrence Howard has had his own issues with law including multiple domestic violence incidents, it turns out that his childhood was also violent. Howard has admitted that his father was physically abusive when he was growing up, and while his father beat him, when he was only two years old he witnessed his father stab another man. Terrence and his father Tyrone were in line waiting to see Santa Claus when another man accused them of cutting in line which began an argument between the man and Tyrone. Tyrone stabbed the man multiple times and he later died causing Tyrone to spend 11 months in jail for manslaughter.

25. Michael Douglas’s Son

Cameron Douglas – Michael Douglas’s son from his first marriage to Diandra Luker – had numerous brushes with the law and they have all been related to drugs, possession and trafficking. In 2010, he was charged with intent to distribute and he pleaded guilty to both conspiracy to distribute drugs and to heroin possession. He received five years in prison; however, while he was in prison he was sentenced to another four and a half years for possessing cocaine and heroin. His lawyer was reportedly the one smuggling the drugs into jail for him.

24. Dane Cook’s Brother

Dane Cook’s half-brother Darryl McCauley was his business manager from the early ‘90s until 2008 when the actor-comedian discovered that McCauley had been embezzling millions of dollars since 2004. The disgraced business manager pleaded guilty to 27 counts of larceny over $250, three counts of forgery, embezzlement and other charges and, in 2010, he was sentenced to five years in prison and was ordered to repay Cook $12 million.

23. Charlize Theron’s Parents

Before she became one of Hollywood’s most popular actresses, Charlize Theron’s childhood was something more likely to be seen on Dateline. Theron was born in Benoni, South Africa to Gerda and Charles Theron but it was not a loving home. Theron’s father was an angry alcoholic who threatened both Theron and her mother numerous times, but nothing serious happened until one night when she was 15. Theron’s father reportedly grabbed his gun while drunk and began threatening both his daughter and his wife before he eventually attacked Gerda. In response, Charlize’s mother grabbed another gun and shot and killed him. She was deemed innocent by self-defence and no charges were laid.

22. Jackie Chan’s Son

Jaycee Chan – son of legendary actor Jackie Chan – was arrested in Beijing, China in 2014 for drug possession when police found more than three ounces of marijuana in his apartment. He also tested positive for marijuana. Chinese police charged him with “the crime of sheltering others to take drugs,” to which he pleaded guilty. Despite the charge carrying with it the possibility of life imprisonment or the death penalty, he was only jailed for six months. What made matters worse was that in 2009 Jackie Chan was  named an “anti-drug ambassador” by the Chinese government, actively taking part in anti-drug campaigns and supporting President Hu Jintao’s declaration that illegal drugs should be eradicated, and their users punished severely.

21. Nicki Minaj’s Brother

In December of 2015, Nicki Minaj was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons when her brother, Jelani Maraj, was arrested on Long Island on first-degree rape and first-degree sexual conduct charges involving a then 11-year-old. It was later revealed the victim was Maraj’s own stepdaughter who claimed in court the assaults began when Maraj’s relationship with her mother “turned sour” but continued for months, even after the Maraj and her mother were married. The case has been continuously delayed when it comes to Maraj’s sentencing, but he is facing 25 years to life in prison.

20. Hayden Panettiere’s Father

Hayden Panettiere’s father was arrested for felony domestic violence back in 2008 after he struck her mother three times in the face with a closed first. According to police, a visible mark was left on her cheek. Panettiere’s parents had been at a party at Eva Longoria’s restaurant, Beso, earlier that evening and police say that he felt disrespected by his wife, which led him to hit her a few times. Her father was charged with spousal battery and was placed on probation for two years.

19. Billy Bob Thorton’s Daughter

In 2011, Billy Bob Thornton’s estranged daughter Amanda Brumfield was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murdering a friend’s daughter, one-year-old Olivia Madison Garcia, while she was babysitting her. Brumfield claimed that the child had fallen and hit her head while trying to climb out of her playpen; however, prosecutors said that it was “impossible” because of the three-and-a-half inch fracture found on Garcia’s skull and the bleeding and swelling that was found in her brain. When it came time to comment on his daughter’s legal situation, Thornton didn’t have much to say except that they had been estranged for years prior to this.

18. Reese Witherspoon’s Brother

Reese Witherspoon’s brother John was charged with aggravated burglary and sexual battery back in 2002 when he entered a neighbor’s house and began kissing her and undressing her while she slept on her couch. He pleaded guilty to both charges, but claimed that he was drunk at the time and did not remember what he did. John received two years probation and was forced to attend weekly meetings at Nashville’s Vanderbilt Institute for the Treatment of Addiction for two years as well.

17. Hulk Hogan’s Son

Hulk Hogan’s son Nick Hogan was charged with several driving violations, including a felony, in 2007 when he lost control of his car and crashed into a palm tree. He was wearing a seat belt, but his friend, 22-year-old John Graziano, wasn’t. His friend was so severely injured as a result that he will need medical care for the rest of his life. Nick pleaded no contest to the charges and was sentenced to eight months in jail, five years of probation, 500 community service hours, and his driver’s license was suspended for three years.

16. Demi Moore’s Parents

Demi Moore’s upbringing was anything but rosy. Her parents split up before she was born, so she was raised by her mother and stepfather, who both drank heavily. Her stepfather ended up committing suicide a couple of years after he separated from her mother while her mother went on to have a number of problems with the law. She was reportedly arrested on a number of different occasions for crimes including drunk driving and arson.

15. Heidi Montag’s Father

In early 2015, reality star Heidi Montag’s father was in the news for a very serious crime. Bill Montag was arrested for “three counts of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, and one charge of aggravated incest.” Police records indicated the victim claims the abuse lasted for four years between the years of 1993 and 1998 when she was 14-17 years old however, “due to the statute of limitations, Montag is only eligible to be charged with crimes that occurred after July 1, 1996, when the victim would have been 16 years old.” Bill Montag denied all of the allegations and entered a not guilty plea, and there has been little information on the case since.

14. Marlon Brando’s Son

Marlon Brando’s eldest son Christian shot his younger sister Cheyenne’s boyfriend Dag Drollet in a drunken rage after she told him that he had been abusing her. Christian later claimed that the shooting was an accident and that he was just trying to scare Drollet. According to him, they had been fighting for the gun when it accidentally went off. Christian was charged and convicted of voluntary manslaughter in 1991 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. After serving five years, he was released in 1996. Twelve years later, in 2008, Christian died from pneumonia.

13. Nicki Minaj’s Father

Nicki Minaj, born Onika Tanya Maraj, has been open about her trouble childhood, including that her parents would often fight which would include physical abuse towards each other. Police often visited their home and her father who was addicted to drugs and alcohol would often fly into rages, but it went too far one night. When Minaj was only 5 years old her father became incredibly angry when her mother would not give him any money. He then attempted to burn their house down while her mother was still inside. Aside from that incident of attempted murder, Minaj has also detailed a time when her father pulled her mother out of a car and dragged her for two blocks.

12. Lindsay Lohan’s Father

Although Lindsay Lohan has her own lengthy record of run-ins with the law, her father Michael Lohan is well known for his own legal issues. Michael Lohan has been in and out of prison for decades now with crimes ranging from insider trading to violating probation as well as driving under the influence and assault. In 2011, Lohan was arrested after an incident of domestic violence involving his ex-girlfriend Kate Major who claimed Michael had hit her. Michael Lohan was initially arrested for three felonies, including false imprisonment, but the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office declined to pursue those charges.

11. Paris Hilton’s Brother

While Paris Hilton was busy stealing the spotlight with her own reality show and antics, her little brother Conrad Hilton has continuously been getting into serious legal issues. Conrad Hilton has reportedly had a drug problem since he was a teenager and trouble really began for him in 2008. In 2008, at only 18 Conrad was arrested for a DUI after another driver observed his black Mercedes driving erratically on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. He was sentenced by a Malibu court to three years probation and two alcohol education classes — while his license was suspended for a year. In March 2015, Conrad plead guilty to assault for making threats against both passengers and flight attendants on an international flight from London to Los Angeles in July 2014. He has also been arrested for violating parole stemming from drug possession charges and in early May 2017 he violated a restraining order filed against him by ex-girlfriend Hunter Daily in 2015, and was arrested for stealing a Bentley belonging to Hunter’s dad, Rick Salomon—an act for which he was charged with grand theft auto.

10. Judith Barsi’s Father

Many may not remember the name Judith Barsi, but they certainly remember her voice! Barsi was a child actress who was best known for voicing the character of Duckie in the Land Before Time films, before her untimely death at the hands of her father. Barsi’s father Jozsef was a known alcoholic with many drinking and driving charges, but as his daughter’s fame increased, so did his drinking and temper. It became so bad that Barsi’s mother Maria finally reported him to the police for his threats of physical violence in 1986, but after they found no signs of physical abuse, it continued in their home. Then when Judith was only 10 years old, her father shot both her and her mother before burning their bodies. After doing so he shot himself a few days later.

9. Rod Stewart’s Son

Sean Stewart – son of Rod Stewart – was charged for riding a luggage carousel into a restricted area at Miami International Airport in March 2012. This wasn’t his first brush with the law. In 2002, he was jailed for 90 days for attacking a man outside of a nightclub and in 2007 he was charged with attacking a couple with a brick after he was denied entrance to a Hollywood party. In 2010, he was arrested again when he was pulled over for a traffic violation and the officer discovered he was driving with an outstanding warrant for a suspended license.

8. Hope Solo’s Father

Hope Solo has become known for being one of the most controversial athletes in the world, but her childhood still receives much empathy. After her parents were married for a short time, her father Jeffrey was arrested and imprisoned for embezzlement and during his time behind bars, Hope was conceived during a conjugal visit. From a young age, her father was in and out of her life following her parent’s divorce until one day he took both her and her brother to a baseball game. Instead of going to the game, he drove them over three hours away to Seattle where they were for several days before police caught up to them and Jeffrey was arrested for kidnapping.

7. Farah Fawcett’s Son

The late Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal’s son Redmond has struggled with heroin addiction for most of his adult life and because of this he has found himself in a lot of trouble with the law. He was jailed in 2009 after he was found with heroin during a routine security check at the Pitchess Detention Center. Unfortunately, after that, he just couldn’t stay out of trouble. In 2015, he was sentenced to three years in prison after he admitted to violating terms of his probation stemming from a felony heroin drug possession conviction the previous year.

6. Tobey Maguire Father

Tobey Maguire’s father reportedly robbed a bank across the street from the family’s house. He must not have been thinking clearly because he did in broad daylight without a mask or a weapon. He was arrested an hour after he committed the crime and served two years in prison. He said that he felt the need to turn to robbery because his sister died and left him her two children to support. Since the incident, Maguire’s been a model citizen.

5. Hugh Hefner’s Son

Hugh Hefner’s eldest son Marston Hefner was sentenced to a 52 weeks domestic violence program after he punched his girlfriend at the time, playmate Clair Sinclair.  The Playboy heir was charged with corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant to which he pleaded no contest.

4. Dylan McDermott Stepfather

In 1967, Dylan McDermott’s mother was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend/Dylan’s step father, John Sponza. Since Sponza was the only witness and denied any wrongdoing, her death was classified as an accidental shooting for four decades. In 2012, police reopened the case and determined that she had been murdered. Police then revealed that they had enough evidence to press charges years ago, but in 1972 Sponza was found dead in the trunk of a car.

3. Kellie Pickler’s Parents

Kellie Pickler’s childhood was anything but easy. Growing up, her father struggled with drug and alcohol addictions and he served a succession of prison stints. Her mother had her own legal troubles. She was convicted for prescription forgery and was charged with writing bad checks. While her mother has stayed out of trouble, her father hasn’t. He served a three-year, nine-month prison sentence at Florida State Prison for aggravated assault and battery stemming from a 2003 stabbing incident.

2. Woody Harrelson’s Father

Woody Harrelson’s father – Charles Harrelson – was a well-paid hitman who, despite serving a prison sentence, continued to kill for money. In 1973, he served five years out of a 15-year prison sentence for the murder of Sam Degelia Jr.; however, in 1979, he killed again for money. This time he murdered a Federal judge and was sentenced to two life sentences. Charles ended up dying in prison of a heart attack in 2007.

1. Leighton Meester’s Parents

Leighton Meester’s parents served time in a federal prison for their involvement in a drug ring that smuggled 1,200-pound shipments of marijuana from Jamaica to the U.S. When Meester was born, her mother was in the process of serving her 10-year prison sentence. While she was given special permission to give birth in a hospital and nurse her daughter for three months in a halfway, she then had to go back to prison and finish her sentence.
