Ukraine will receive PT-91 tanks from Poland

Ukraine is set to receive PT-91 Twardy main battle tanks from Poland to help the country repel Russian attacks.

Poland will deliver 60 tanks to Ukraine, including the PT-91 Twardy, said the head of the Ukrainian president’s office, Andrii Yermak.

The tanks will be delivered on top of the fourteen German Leopard 2 tanks that Warsaw promised to Ukraine on January 11, and whose transfer was only recently officially approved by Berlin.

In an interview with the Canadian television channel CTV news, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that 30 tanks will be PT-91 Twardy models, and the rest will be upgraded Soviet T-72 tanks.

The PT-91 is a modernized version of the T-72 developed in Poland, of which there are said to be around 230. It is a further development of the Russian-made T-72M1 tank by Zaklady Mechaniczne Bumar-Labedy SA which has been manufactured for years under license in Poland.

The PT-91 has a more powerful engine compared to the T-72. It is equipped with an S-12U diesel engine that develops 850 horsepower. The S-1000 turbo diesel engine, which develops 1000 horsepower, was also developed.
