
Developers are now allowed to fork the v3 protocol as its Business Source License (BSL) expired on April 1st, shows protocol documentation. The expiration has been a long-awaited event within the DeFi ecosystem, as it allows developers to implement their own decentralized exchange (DEX).
BSL is a type of license that needs to last for a certain period of time before it becomes fully open source. In general, the purpose is to protect the right of authors to profit from their creations. Uniswap v3 was licensed in 2021 for a period of two years, preventing commercial use of its code. A new license called the General Public License now applies to the protocol.
