A roadside police stop in Memphis resulted in the death of a young black American man after he was brutally beaten by the officers.

Tyre Nichols’ name has now been added to the long list of victims killed by those entrusted with law enforcement and the protection of the public.

The condemnation was led by US President Joe Biden.

It echoes the widespread outrage over other incidents such as the police killing of George Floyd nearly three years ago.

Why do such cases keep recurring? What can be done to stop them? And what role does racial diversity play in US law enforcement?
