The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air could be making a comeback!
Will Smith is reportedly teaming up with his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith to create a spin-off of the hit 1990s show.
Will’s sitcom, which saw his character of the same name sent from Philadelphia to live with his rich aunt and uncle in Bel-Air, ran from 1990 to 1996 and delighted a huge legion of fans.
Now, it looks set to entertain a new generation.
According to The Hollywood Reporter , the spin-off project will be managed by Westbrook Inc, a new media company co-founded by Will and his actress wife.
And it’s sure to be an extremely profitable venture given the fact that the cast of the original show still receive syndication cheques and streaming royalties to this day.
No specific details are known about the spin-off at the moment.
Will also recently launched a Fresh Prince line of sportswear inspired by the 90s fashion seen in the show, so it seems he’s keen on upping the profile even more.
The star, 51, once joked during an appearance on The Graham Norton show that he’d have to play the Uncle Phil character because of the age he’s now at.
Will, who played the Genie in the new live-action remake of Aladdin, said accepting the role was all down to his son Jaden and the Fresh Prince.
The actor, who is also dad to daughter Willow and son Trey, said: “The thing that people walk up to me on the street the most for is the Fresh Prince, so if the Genie could knock that character out, it would be fantastic.”
He added: “I had a couple of films that I was looking at and I was trying to decide what I was going to do and Jaden walked in the room…I hadn’t told anyone by then that I’d been offered the Genie yet, Jaden was the first person.
“He kind of looked for a second, and he was like, ‘Duh. The Genie. The chance to play the Genie? Are you crazy?'”
